Featured Quilt - A Painterly Piece of Quilting
Sometimes you walk up, look at a quilt, and are not sure how it was made. Did they embellish this? Was it hand stitched? Could this be embroidered? There are cases when you look at one and go, "Is this even a quilt?" That last question was probably asked countless times of Hsiu-Pei Hsieh and their quilt, Lakes and Mountains. Featured as part of the Landscape Quilts exhibit at Houston International Quilt Festival 2024, we almost feel as if that was the general concept that Hsiu-Pei was going for, as evidenced by the artist statement for their work. "The boatman paddled on the clear lake. The clear lake water reflects the surrounding lakes, mountains, and churches. It looks like a painting!"
And in case you were wondering, it is not a painting. The look of Lakes and Mountains was accomplished through a combination of hand embellishment and machine quilting. |

The Quilt Show Puzzle: An Improvisational Tribute |
"Ode to Gwen JOY Marston" by Marge Tucker
Ode to Gwen JOY Marston was made as a tribute to Gwen Marston, who's middle name was Joy. Marge had taken classes and workshops from Gwen, and the fabric pieces used in the center of the quilt are from a box of rectangles that Gwen sent to her. Marge saved those pieces for a long time, knowing they were meant for a special project. When she learned that Gwen had passed in April 2019, Marge remembered that box and began to cut those rectangles into improvisational triangles, which was a technique Gwen showed her how to do, and began to make this quilt.
