The awesome Big Blue Whale was made in 2016 by Caitlyn Paige Baxter, age 7, with help from her mom Tiffany Baxter. It was exhibited on The Quilt Show set by Amy Milne of the Quilt Alliance. The quilt measures 47" x 53".

The whale in Big Blue Whale is adapted from Elizabeth Hartman's Preppy Pod pattern, and the quilt was made using the Michael Miller Challenge fabrics. Big Blue Whale received the 2nd place ribbon at the Modern Quilt Guild's QuiltCon 2017, in the Youth Category.

Below is Caitlyn's Artist Statement as written in the fall of 2016.

"The Michael Miller Luxe fabric made me think of water and water made me think of ocean animals and the first ocean animal that came to me was a whale because I like whales.  We thought of the diamond shapes for the spout because the fabric has diamonds on it.  I stitched all of it, and my mom helped me cut and pin the pieces.  Mommy helped me quilt it, and she also helped me with the binding.  I used Luxe Tumble Blocks, Fog, Luna, Midnight, and Magic Folk.  The whale is from the Preppy Pod pattern by Elizabeth Hartman."
