Fiona Schiffl Rooster pattern
Dee, Where do you find these fabulous artists??? When I saw the newsletter this morning I thought that stained
glass rooster was so cute. I had never heard of Fiona Schiffl, so I googled her and went to her website. What a
wealth of information. I love, love, love her whole cloth quilting designs. I will definitely be buying some of her
books. The free rooster pattern under tips and techniques really surprised me. I will need to study her entire
website before deciding what to get. Seems like I always want it all, but only can afford a little. It is nice
to see artists that put some free designs up on their sites. Looking forward to your classes. Thank you for
bringing all this great info to TQS. Loving every minute of it. HelenWTags: None

Dee, I just printed my rooster pattern on vellum. You can see thru it and by flipping it over to the other side you have the reverse image
without having to trace it. It saves one tracing, you can just flip it over and trace onto the fusible web. I alway write in big letter
at the top Pattern Side and on the other side I write Mirror Image side, or you could write reverse side. Another tip for saving
having to trace onto the fusible is to print the whole pattern on the freezer paper sheets that run thru the printer. Then you cut out
the shape like for piece #1. I cut a piece of fabric a little bigger than the shape and put fusible web on it. Iron the freezer paper
to the front of the fabric. Cut it out, pull the freezer off and the release paper off. Put your vellum copy under the background
white muslin, and you can see the lines without tracing. Painter tape in place so things don't shift. Lay you piece down in place.
If you don't like the fabric you picked, you can use the freezer paper shape again to audition another color. When I have a few minutes
to work on this project I will take some pictures of my process. HelenW

Rooster pattern printed on vellum (see thru). To get the mirror image you just flip the whole pattern over and it is ready to trace onto fusible web. I do not plan to trace it , just make another copy on freezer paper that I will cut apart and iron to the front of
the fabric. Put the fusible on the back just a little bigger than pattern piece. I will take pictures of how I do that when I do it.
More accurate than tracing and faster. HelenW

I made a freezer paper copy. I changed my mind after making the big full size layout and decided to go with a 60% rooster pattern.
I cut out one piece and pull off the release paper from the back and place it on the muslin fabric tracing. I am using Steam a Seam and it is tacky enough that I am not pressing anything until I build the whole pattern. I plan to put a row of 4 inch pieced blocks along the bottom and the top. with black border all around. I plan to make whole pattern then lay out the bias tape, that I will
make 1/8 inch instead of 1/4 inch since my overall size is 60 %. I love thinking thru how to do it my own way. But if I was new
to this kind of project I would stick to Dee's wonderful directions and videos. HelenW

I decided that I would only use things I already had in my stash. Working out fine so far. To make
my 1/8 inch bias tape, I went the easy route. I put a sheet of steam a seam on the back of a scrap
of jet black kona cotton. The I laid the ruler with the 45 degree angle at the bottom of the sheet
so I would be cutting the cut on the bias. I plan to edge stitch with a 1.0- 1.0 tiny zig zag. I have
never had fraying when I do that and I have done a lot of it on my version of this year's BOM.
Attached a picture so you can see the 1.0- 1.0 zig zag. I plan to put some pieced blocks that have black background at the
bottom and a black border around it. As mentioned before I made it 60% size.I am not
fusing anything down until it is totally laid out. That allow me to use my tweezers to tuck
ends under. HelenWLast edited by Helen W.; 09-09-2022, 08:25 AM.

Decided to play around with block ideas for top and bottom. Drew this one up in EQ8 this morning. Will continue to audition
blocks as I get the rooster done. This set of blocks was to carry the stained glass idea to the blocks too. HelenW
