Hand applique isn't too hard if you're using the right tools...pick a nice Sharp needle (you might need to try a few to find the one you like the best - my favorite is a Richard Hemming #10), use a nice thin strong thread like a #80 wt or #100 (I just have the neutral colors - white, black, greys and they blend into everything). Take small little "bites" of the top fabric giving it a little tug to sink your thread into it. Stitch about every 1/8" of an inch. Don't worry - you'll get the hang of it fast - it just takes muscle memory - and yes good lighting! Oh and I use a Clover Desk needle threader to thread that little thread into the little eyes - lol! Good luck!!

This is my very first time doing hand applique. I loved learning Sarah's method for making bias tape which REALLY WORKS WELL. Had to redo one of the strips as it was off-center from the star center but I am now happy with how it has turned out. Looking forward to learning how to make circles using Sarah's method.

Month 1 is done. I am so happy that the month’s are reasonable amounts of work. I got this done despite being away for 2 weeks. I enjoyed making the cabin. I used the freezer paper piecing method we used in Color My World. Thanks Barbara for the dimensions. I need to work on the stems. They are so small to iron. I may go to Kay Buckley’s Perfect Stems. I’m enjoying seeing everyone’s cabins. There is so much creativity in this group!Beth Palluzi

Hi Barbara,
I am so glad to be joining you this year for BOM. I did Color My World with you and thought it was just great. I do like to paper piece, so this one will be a bit of a challenge. When you said that we could create a paper pieced building, I thought what a good idea, something I can do. So, as you can see, I changed up my building a bit. I think I might change all of them a bit, just to make them different. One of my questions is, will all the building blocks be total size 6.5 inches?
Looking forward for the months to come.

So I finally got some time in the studio to get January's done! I'm doing this BOM mostly to get back to my roots and to hone my traditional quilting skills. Honestly, I can't even remember the last time I actually followed a pattern with someone else's instructions so that was fun. One of the rules of this quilt is that I make it exactly how Sarah instructed (I would have paper pieced the cabin too). I did manage to do my bias stems the way she instructed although Sarah makes it looks so easy. I think it's more of an acquired skill! It was fun to hand applique again though! I used Wonderfil 100 wt thread and the stitches are invisible! Lookin' forward to next month!Last edited by NinaMarie; 01-27-2023, 06:12 PM.Nina-Marie
