Show 2306: Jamie Wallen - The Building Blocks of Quilt Design

Featuring: Jamie Wallen

Posts On: September 9, 2018

Trailer

Alex and Ricky welcome back Jamie Wallen who shares the touching story of how the quilting community came to his aid during the 2016 Houston Quilt Festival after the entire contents of his trailer with 70 quilts, products, and class materials were stolen the night before the show opening.

With eyes forward, Jamie is excited to share his method of flushing out ideas on paper to avoid problems later during the quilting phase. Along with tips for planning and building a border design, Jamie shares ways to make your machine stitches pop and removes the fear of a complex medallion by dividing it into manageable pieces. It’s all just another day in the office for this talented artist.

From Chapter One:

Alex and Ricky sit down with jamie and learn about the devastating theft that occurred the night before the Houston Quilt Festival where he lost everything. Learn how quilters across the country came to his rescue. They also take a look at some of Jamie's wonderful quilts.

From Chapter Two:

Jamie helps you plan out and design your borders.

From Chapter Three:

Jamie is a big proponent of drawing out a design on paper before ever stitching on your fabric. He shares the huge variety of designs that can be created with just one basic shape (diamond, oval, hexagon, medallion). He also shows you how to break a medallion design into manageable units.

From Chapter Four:

Once you have the design created on paper, it's time to stitch it on your fabric. Jamie shares tools to aid in precision, marking, and the proper way to hold the ruler while stitching on your longarm.

I can't find the nesting diamonds on Jamie's web site. Where would I find them? Same question for the nesting ovals and circles. Thanks.

Jamie's a wonderful teacher. So patient while he shares all his talent. I'd love to go to his school for the 5 day retreat. Maybe I'll ask Santa!

Great show. Jamie does such amazing work. Great show. This was even a better show than his last one. Was glad to hear he got some of his quilts back. Too bad it wasn't all of them, and the people who donated quilts back to him (that he quilted) were so generous. Great work and show Jamie!

I have followed Jamie and his quilting company for many many years. I began when he was teaching painting on fabric. Faces intrigued me then and still do. The remarkable feature of Jamie Wallen is his beautiful, charismatic personality. He is kind, respectful, and oh so humble. Thank you all for such a great show. I truly enjoyed just listening even if I was stitching at the same time. Thanks Jamie!

Is there a site that has photos of the quilts stolen? I live in the Houston area and go to garage sales, etc. Is there a phone number to contact if I think I've found one. Loved your show!! I learned so much. Thank You
