Featuring: Katie Pasquini Masopust

Posts On: May 6, 2018

Trailer

Ricky starts off the show with a fun and easy technique for drafting a multi-pieced patchwork goldfish block. The design elements become more interesting as he expands the number of paper-pieced units within the block design itself.

Never one to sit still, Alex and Ricky welcome back Katie P. Masopust to share the secrets behind her new art quilts built using log cabin blocks. Her love of tradition led Katie to see how far she could expand the block.

Enlarged photographs are used to build on a grid system that becomes the framework for the quilt. Varying fabrics, color and value take on the role of major players as an entirely new art quilt is built. Along the way, Katie shares tips for using this most traditional of blocks in an unconventional manner.

Artful Log Cabin Quilts

From Chapter One:

Ricky shares a technique for drafting a simple goldfish block that is then made more complex by expanding the number of paper pieced units within the block design itself. His early quilt ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’ exemplifies this design concept.

From Chapter Two:

As an ever-evolving artist, Katie shares her newest body of work based on the traditional Log Cabin block. She and her sisters, have for years, gotten together to make Log Cabin block quilts that are then given to military veterans. She became intrigued by the idea of pushing the Log Cabin block to see where it might lead.

From Chapter Three:

Using a photo, Katie shows how to crop, enlarge and finally create a grid structure that will form the roadmap of the quilt. Each log cabin block serves as a unit within the grid portion.

From Chapter Four:

Katie demonstrates how she builds her Cabbage Rose block that does not require the usual light/dark piecing.
