Featured Quilt - Catching Great Success

Hometown of Kirara - Fishing Village by Aayako Kawakami won Third Place - Hand Quilted Quilts (Sponsored by Arrow Sewing) at AQS Quiltweek 2022.

Aayako was inspired to make this quilt to capture a moment that was shared between her grandfather and her daughter. She says, "When we went back to the village and got off the train, we smelled a salty sea breeze and saw crabs walking on the beach. Each year, there is a New Year's ceremony of hanging a big-catch flag on boats. The scene is so magnificent. I made this quilt to capture a happy memory between my daughter and her grandfather."

Sustaining Through Quiltmaking

Take a look behind-the-scenes  at the upcoming virtual exhibition Sustaining Through Quiltmaking, presented in conjunction with the Quilt Alliance's 'Quilters Take a Moment' virtual fundraising event. This year's virtual Quilters Take a Moment event theme is 'Sustainability Stories', and writer and curator Laura Hopper has selected works for a free digital exhibit that incorporate themes of sustainability in all its forms, from environmental sustainability to sustaining a creative spirit. We'll hear from Laura about the exhibit, hear stories straight from the featured quiltmakers, and learn more about curating this unique exhibition.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Swirling To New Heights
"So Many Swirls" by Renae Haddadin

So Many Swirls is the first quilt that Renae entered into shows. She had been quilting about nine months with a longarm before making this quilt. Having started her own longarm business and needing to attract some clients, Renae created this wonderful work and entered it into shows in the hopes that it would win a ribbon and draw some good PR. In the end it did end up winning awards, causing Renae to be over the moon with excitement.
