Featured Quilt - Outstanding Original Design at Road to California 2026

My Favorite Things by Hiroko Miyama and Masanobu Miyama has won a slew of awards over the last couple of years, including Second Place - Wall Quilt: Quilter’s Choice at AQS QuiltWeek – Paducah 2025Best Wall Quilt at AQS QuiltWeek - Branson 2025 and an Honorable Mention in the Wall Quilts: Fiber Art / Mixed Media at AQS QuiltWeek - Daytona Beach 2025.

Last month, it received the award for Outstanding Original Design at Road to California 2026, and it's not hard to see why due to its creative concept. It features Hiroko's granddaughter, her three dogs, and all of her granddaughter's favorite things. She says, "Momo's favorite things became a quilt. A caterpillar of the Great Purple Emperor, Moo-chan, on her palm, butterflies on Sumire, Yuri running to Momo, and Ponta staring at her hand are also her favorites, as well as mushrooms, beetles, and other insects. The patterns on her clothes are made with appliqué. The insects and mushrooms are made with punchneedle appliqué. Butterflies are original embroidery, and it took 90 hours including data creation.”

After viewing Hiroko's quilt in the gallery, be sure to click the Quilt Video tab to watch her interview with AQS Executive Show Director Michelle Renee Hiatt on the floor of AQS QuiltWeek Daytona Beach 2025 after winning her Honorable Mention award, where she talks about her quilt and the amazing details she incorporated into it.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Something to Remember

"Remembrance" by Judith Phelps

Remembrance by Judith Phelps won Best Wall Quilt at AQS QuiltWeek - Grand Rapids 2024 and Second Place - Pictorial Small at the 2022 Houston International Quilt Festival among other awards. Judith says, "For a Book Club Thread Tales Challenge, I used The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, which takes place in France during World War Two. A woman ties three red ribbons to an apple tree in her front yard for Antoine, her husband taken as a prisoner of war; Rachel, a Jewish best friend forced into a cattle car; and Sara, a young Jewish girl who was shot and killed. The stone wall around the apple tree had been torn down by the Germans. The ribbons represent a promise to never forget!"
